The unemployment rate in El Paso is slightly higher than the national rate, but the metro area's economy is fairly strong.

Located on the border of the U.S. and Mexico, El Paso has a strong federal government presence with opportunities for those interested in joining the U.S. Customs and Border Protection team. The metro area also has a high demand for those in the health care profession at facilities like the University Medical Center of El Paso and Del Sol Medical Center. There are also opportunities in the education sector at the University of Texas' El Paso campus. 

El Paso has seen growth in other fields such as engineering and technology thanks to a number of large companies based in the area, including Hewlett Packard and Raytheon. But the city will be losing the Boeing facility and about 300 jobs by 2020 due to the consolidation of the company's corporate facilities.
